Tips to Choose a New Gas Furnace

Making a choice among the many providers of gas furnaces to heat your home can be an overwhelming decision. The following tips can help you choose the most efficient model that best fits your needs. Keep in mind that qualified HVAC specialists provide excellent advice and can make installation recommendations.

Does size matter?

Deciding on the size of the unit can be difficult, and must include such concerns as weather seasonally and year-round, the desired heat of the home, and the square footage. The size of the heater should not be too small, which forces the gas furnace to continuously run. A large furnace will run off and on, or use far too much power to keep a smaller home warm. Purchase and installation of a gas furnace should be completed with the help of a qualified HVAC specialist.

What are important features to consider?

When considering purchasing a gas furnace, two main types of these appliances are available: condensing and non-condensing. A more expensive and efficient type of gas furnace, condensing units have separate heat exchangers that absorb exhaust fumes that are side effects of heating with this type of appliance. Cheaper but less efficient, non-condensing gas furnaces do not have the separate heat exchanger. Remote thermostats, timed thermostats or differentiated speeds make up other features that homeowners may find important to them.

Efficiency of Heating

Of all the features that are important on a gas furnace, efficiency of heating is the most important. Each gas furnace holds its own AFUE, or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency percentage, which can be found on the product packaging. Generally prices follow AFUE readings. Efficient AFUE readings above 90 percent are often condensing heaters, which are priced at the top level and should be purchased for homes in colder weather. Gas furnaces with an AFUE percentage of 60-90 percent are mid-priced, and should be used for structures requiring less heat year round. Efficiencies of less than 60 percent are often very inefficient and should only be purchased for homes that rarely need heating services.

Is it worth it?

To decide if the purchase of a particular gas furnace is worth the money needed for installation, energy bills and maintenance, divide the cost of the appliance with the drop in fuel costs needed each year from having a newer, more efficient model. Keep in mind your specific needs, weather conditions and heed advice of a qualified, experienced HVAC inspector/installer. AFUE scores can give an idea of the efficiency of the gas furnace.

What are some major gas furnace brands?

Some popular gas furnace choices include Rinnai, Fedders and Rheem products. Carrier produces many large-grade, efficient products. Stores like Home Depot, Lowes or Amazon.com offer reviews and recommendations of gas furnace ideas for homes like yours.

Sprint LG Marquee updated with call lock-up bug fix

LG Marquee

Owners of Sprint's LG Marquee (a distant cousin of the LG Optimus Black) will be pleased to see the roll-out of a new software update for the device. The new version LS855ZVC fixes one glitch that's been particularly frustrating for some users -- a bug which sometimes resulted in the phone locking up during calls. In addition, Sprint says the update improves the Marquee's security, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on whether you're interested in rooting the device.

Head on over to "Settings > About Phone  > System Updates > Update LG Software" and check for updates to see if yours is ready. As ever, these updates are doled out gradually over time, so don't be too alarmed if you don't see anything just yet.

Shown at a 2009 ceremony at which Gov. John Lynch signed legislation giving St. John International University a New Hampshire charter, are, from left: N.H. Sen. Lou D'Allesandro, a member of the St. John board of trustees; Piero Ceria, who is now acting president of the school; Governor Lynch; Lorenzina Zampedri, founder of the college and wife of Ciera; Sen. Sylvia Larsen, another college trustee; and Father Jonathan DeFelice, president of St. Anselm College and a St. John trustee.

St. John International University Inc., a New Hampshire-chartered institution whose campus is in an ancient castle in Italy, appears to be in serious financial trouble, casting a shadow on the future of the college's 65 enrolled students, including about 20 from the Granite State.

The fledgling university is allegedly months behind on its bills, has lost most of its U.S. staff -- its U.S. phone is disconnected -- is reportedly fighting to hold on to its Italian castle and is the target of at least two lawsuits on both sides of the Atlantic, including one by its former CEO, George Hagerty, who previously was president of Franklin Pierce University in Rindge for 16 years.

Because of that "contract labor dispute," the university has declined to respond to detailed questions, wrote high-powered Concord lobbyist James Bianco Jr. - the school's secretary, board member, agent and attorney - in an email after a St. John board meeting on March 19.

"The board has conducted its due diligence and has been assured that SJIU's financial situation is stable," Bianco wrote to NHBR.

But Hagerty and three staff members have complained to the New Hampshire Higher Education Commission, the state agency that approved and regulates the university. They wrote a month earlier of the "the systemic unraveling of the university that is now occurring,"

Their letter added: "Our belief that this unfolding matter is escalating in an unhealthy direction, and that the welfare and interests of students, faculty, and staff are approaching the point of compromise."

That commission is chaired by Father Jonathan DeFelice, president of Saint Anselm College and a St. John board member.

DeFelice did not return NHBR's phone calls, but the commission's vice chair, University System of New Hampshire Chancellor Edward MacKay, said a complaint has been filed, although the commission's board has not met on it.

"I presume that he [DeFelice] will recuse himself," said MacKay.

The former Postsecondary Education Commission has not had an executive director due to budget cuts and its reorganization into the Department of Education, so MacKay referred all questions on the matter to Education Commissioner Virginia M. Barry, who was on vacation and could not be reached by deadline.

Several of those who wrote the letter to the higher education commission said that there has been no response from either the commission or the board about their complaint.

Attached account

The commission was, however, actively looking into a proposal allowing the startup of another college to be chartered in New Hampshire but whose campus would be in Jordan, according to N.H. Sen. Lou D'Allesandro, D-Manchester, another St. John board member who recently returned from the Middle East country as part of the commission's "due diligence."

D'Allesandro, who sponsored the legislation to grant St. John degree-making authority, said he was hoping that the state could become a center to promote such international education institutions.

"Why not?" he said. "We need the jobs."

But thus far, jobs generated by St. John have not been paying, according to Hagerty in his lawsuit and other staffers in various interviews with NHBR.

In his suit, Hagerty claims that he was only paid one month out of the five he worked on his $135,000-a-year contract, despite pleading for his back pay.

Hagerty's suit -- filed in Merrimack County Superior Court Feb. 15 -- is accompanied by a $100,000 attachment to the university's bank account at TD Bank.

In that filing, Hagerty -- who now lives outside Phoenix, Ariz. -- alleges that "other key employees of the university have also not been paid wages due and owing."

Judge William McGraw approved the attachment on Feb. 23.

Lorenzina Zampedri, chair of the university's board of directors and named personally in the suit, referred all questions about the status of the university to Bianco.

Although Bianco said it would be "inappropriate" to comment in the press on the suit, in a legal response to Hagerty's attachment, he wrote that Hagerty -- who controlled the university's finances -- breached both his contract and his fiduciary duties, "causing great harm" to the university.

Even if the claim were legitimate, wrote Bianco, $100,000 "is excessive and far exceeds any conceivable amount" of what Hagerty was owed.

Hagerty, in a statement to NHBR, said that he was saddened by these "hurtful allegations" and "spurious charges."

"SJIU's leadership is fully aware that I had no control over the University's financial books and records," Hagerty said.

Zampedri replaced Hagerty with Piero Ceria, her husband, who is now acting president.

Vendors unpaid too

Hagerty's charges were echoed by other St. John staff members who signed the letter, except for one signatory, Mary Beth Benbenek, dean of academic affairs, who declined comment because of a wrongful termination suit she said she filed in Italy. Benbenek was terminated on Feb. 20, according to the letter.

"The more we stood up, the more we fell from grace," said Anne Blake, former dean of admissions and student life, who said she left a promising business in Burlington, Vt., to take a position with Hagerty. She was terminated the week after Hagerty left.

Blake said she stood up not so much on her behalf but on the behalf of staffers and faculty who weren't getting paid, and especially because of her concern for the students.

St. John students have been working toward degrees in a range of subjects, from environmental architecture to international arts administration, and others have been studying abroad at the university for the semester.

Several of the students attend the New Hampshire Institute of Art, Plymouth State University and Keene State College, Blake said.

It wasn't just staff that wasn't getting paid, Blake said, but vendors as well.

Perhaps the most publicized dispute is with the city of Vinova, Italy, over a contract allowing the university to operate in Della Rovere, a 16th century castle.

The dispute, according to a university employee, arises from an agreement calling for the university to renovate the upper floors of the castle as a condition for the grant to use it, and it has spilled onto the pages of the Italian press.

"We believe that St. John failed to fulfill contractual obligations," said Vinova Mayor Maria Teresa Mairo in an article published Feb. 8 in the newspaper L'Eco del Chisone. "Unfortunately we must acknowledge that their project did not work, and we cannot have all the developments that we wanted."

Blake told NHBR some students were also worried about their more humble abodes. The school sponsored rental housing located in the nearby city of Torino, a picturesque gateway to the Alps that was the site of the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Students pay for housing as part of their tuition, room and board package (which is about $20,000 a year), Blake said, but the school was late in paying the landlords.

"One student let us know that he was basically going to be evicted because the school wasn't paying rent," Blake said. "They shouldn't have to be in that position, with landlords coming to the school demanding to be paid."

Those running a nearby caf? also complained to Blake about late payments, she said, "so now we weren't sure about being able to continue providing meals. This is traumatic to daily be putting out these fires, not knowing day to day whether they get a meal, have to leave their apartments."

And, Blake said, as teachers left over pay disputes, students were uncertain about their courses, both because some faculty left and others canceled classes in protest.

Giuliano Pairone, former chair of the college's Architecture Department, was one of the professors who left, though he said he is still collaborating with the university.

Pairone said he began teaching in September 2010 and stayed until February, even though his salary was paid sporadically and salaries had been cut in half in September 2011. He said he kept his ties to the school because things were starting "to get better, much better" after Hagerty came with his "American team".

He continued to collaborate because "I did not want to act against my students," he said, adding that he was finally paid in full on March 16.

Zampedri filled the vacated positions with qualified Italians, but -- the letter to the New Hampshire commission complained -- "none had experience in American higher education" and that expertise was needed in an American educational institution.

There was also a rental dispute involving St. John's Concord headquarters, according to Andrea Brody, dean of international programs, who was dismissed along with Blake.

Brody worked out of that office, located behind Coldwell Banker J. Hampe Associates of Concord at 35 Pleasant St. She said she was contacted by the landlord for rent due in July, and had not been paid when she turned in her keys in February.

This is important, she said, because the state charter requires that the school keep a physical location in New Hampshire. The Concord office phone is disconnected, but the St. John sign still hangs above the office door, which was locked when NHBR visited on March 16.

The landlord, Judith Hampe, did not return phone calls to verify if the office was still being rented by St. John.

The letter to the higher education commission claimed that the board was notified about the various financial difficulties as far back as December, but it is unclear exactly what information was passed along.

D'Allesandro said Zampedri briefed the board that key staff had left, but was not aware that they had not been paid.

"We were assured that everything was under control," D'Allesandro said.

Other board members were N.H. Sen. Sylvia Larsen, D-Concord, Lisa DeStefano of DeStefano Architects in Portsmouth and David Li, vice president of Elliot Hospital in Manchester.

Patrizia Parpajola and Silvia Ciotti, both employed by St. John as director of marketing and chair of the Department of Environmental Science respectively, are the only Italian members of the board besides Zampedri.

In May 2010, Zampedri listed herself as the "sole incorporator" in amended articles of incorporation that increased the number of shares from 2,000 to 1 million.

The letter also alluded to an attempt to obtain financing from the university's minority shareholder, University Advisors International.

Both Blake and Brody lauded Hagerty for that initiative and blamed Zampedri for not going through with the deal.

According to the New Hampshire Secretary of State's records, UAI was incorporated by John Forman, owner and CEO of O'Brien Energy in Portsmouth, and W. Donald Gough, president of Gough Management Co. Inc. in New Castle. Messages left with both at were not returned by NHBR deadline.

Now, with the help of healthy smoothies, you can do something beneficial for your body within just minutes. Smoothies are the biggest craze to hit the health and fitness world in recent months, and it is not hard to see just exactly why!Adding a smoothie to your day can work wonders for your body, and there is no easier and simpler option around. Smoothies have been proven to both re-energize and refresh a person's body and mind, and can really make a difference in your day. To demonstrate just how easy it is to create and benefit from a smoothie, here is a list of the things you'll need to make this process happen: a blender and the fruits and vegetables you'd like to put into the smoothie. That's it! There is no additional extra cost. Smoothies are simple, easy, and cheap to make!If you can't decide on what type of smoothie you'd like to make, one of the most simple and enjoyable options is called the "full meal" smoothie. Packing the ingredients of an entire breakfast into a smoothie, this will be sure to both fill you up and get you ready for the day. The ingredients are simple, and all you'll need is: a full banana, a cup of grapes, half of an apple, 5 ounces of your favorite soy or coconut yogurt, and a 1/2 cup of spinach leaves. Another way to find out smoothies that you may enjoy is to mix and match 2 or 3 fruits and at least one vegetable. These smoothies will allow you to replace full meals in your day by giving you the full nutrients you need. These smoothies are great for if you are on the go and do not have enough time to cook an entire meal. If you'd prefer an alternative to a smoothie, a great thing to do is purchase a juicer. A juicer is a machine that that extracts all the nutrients and juices from a fruit or vegetable. These juicers helps create something known as, "Green smoothies." These green smoothies provide Phytochemicals, which are disease fighting chemicals. As time goes on, these green smoothies are gaining more and more popularity. So whether you use a smoothie as a meal supplement or you use it as a rejuvenator after a workout at your home gym or run around the block, there is no better option out there today than to purchase a blender or juicer and start creating smoothies that you enjoy from cheap and healthy fruits and vegetables. The benefits are noticeable within mere days and will help you feel better and healthier than you ever have before. World News - Coup topples 'incompetent regime': Soldiers seize ...

Mali soldiers gather on a Bamako street Wednesday. Scores of Malian soldiers mutinied, firing shots in the air and seizing the state broadcaster amid fury over their poorly-equipped efforts to stamp out a Tuareg insurgency in the north.

By msnbc.com news services

Updated at 10:47?a.m. ET: Renegade Malian soldiers went on state television on Thursday to declare they had seized power in a coup after the government's failure to quell a nomad-led rebellion in the north.

The soldiers of the newly formed National Committee for the Restoration of Democracy and State (CNRDR) read out a brief statement after heavy weapons fire rang out around the presidential palace in the capital Bamako throughout the night.

The United States later condemned the coup.

"The CNRDR ... has decided to assume its responsibilities by putting an end to the incompetent regime of Amadou Toumani Toure," said Amadou Konare, spokesman for the CNRDR.

Curfew
"We promise to hand power back to a democratically elected president as soon as the country is reunified and its integrity is no longer threatened," said Konare, flanked by about two dozen soldiers. A subsequent statement declared an immediate curfew "until further notice."

The statements made no reference to the whereabouts of Toure, who for the past decade has presided over one of the more stable governments in West Africa and was due in any case to step down after elections scheduled for late next month.

A soldier at the presidential palace who asked not to be named because he feared reprisal told The Associated Press the presidential guard had failed to defend the palace against the renegade soldiers. The?unidentified?soldier said while the troops had seized control of the seat of government, they could not find Toure, the country's?democratically elected leader.

A statement from U.S. State Department spokesman Victoria Nuland said: "We echo the statements of the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States and other international partners denouncing these actions. We call for calm and the restoration of the civilian government under constitutional rule without delay, so that elections can proceed as scheduled.

"We stand with the legitimately elected government of President Amadou Toumani Tour?. Mali is a leading democracy in West Africa and its institutions must be respected."

The gold- and cotton-producing nation of Mali has struggled to contain a northern rebellion launched late last year by local Tuareg nomads joined by heavily armed fellow Tuaregs returning from Libya after fighting for ousted leader Moammar Gadhafi.

The rebellion, in which dozens have been killed and nearly 200,000 civilians have fled their homes, has added a new layer of insecurity to a region where al-Qaida allies have carried out a spate of kidnappings of Westerners and other crimes.

It?has also?exposed Bamako's lack of control over the northern half of a country twice the size of France.

The mutineers who complain they lack arms and resources to face the?separatist insurgency.

Bing map

Mali army mutineers reportedly attack presidential palace in the capital, Bamako.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called in a statement for calm and for grievances to be settled democratically.

In a sign of spreading support for the mutiny, two military sources in the northern town of Gao confirmed the arrests of several senior officers in the town, a regional operations centre.

Bamako was briefly paralysed last month as hundreds of Malians put up street barricades and burned tyres in the streets to protest at the government's handling of the rebellion.

Toure, in power since 2002, has said he is planning after April elections. The former paratroop commander overthrew a dictatorship in a 1991 coup and relinquished power a year later before returning to office via the ballot box.

'The talks went badly'
A military source said a trigger for Wednesday's events was a visit by the defense minister to a barracks in the town of Kati about 13 miles north of Bamako.

"The minister went to speak to troops but the talks went badly and people were complaining about the handling of the crisis in the north," the source said.

A defense ministry official who was at the meeting said a soldier accused the defense minister of betraying them by not giving them means to fight the rebels. Soldiers then began throwing rocks at the minister before taking weapons from the armory and shooting in the air.

Tuareg fighters seeking to carve out a desert homeland in Mali's north have made advances in recent weeks, including the seizure this month of the key garrison town of Tessalit by the Algerian border.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Parent's Involvement in Children's Education ? Education and ...

ABSTRACT

The importance of parental involvement as an accelerating and motivating factor in their children?s education is a worldwide-accepted fact. This research project provides an in depth explanation along with specific reasons, the importance of parents? involvement in their children?s education. It also discusses the parenting techniques, their types and their consequences if neglected. It also describes the ways to measure the outcome of the positive parental involvement. Furthermore, it mentions the teachers involvement and the difficulties faced by the teachers in getting parents involved in their children?s (this is further supported by the examples of two teachers who with their deliberate efforts won the parents over to devote their maximum attention towards their children), single-parent involvement, children?s own efforts to improve their academic levels and joint home-school based interventions. A detailed analysis of the different main ideas is given, based on the findings from other research surveys and projects.

INTRODUCTION:

Parental involvement can be seen to fall into three types: 1) Behavioral, 2) Intellectual and 3) Personal. The research explores the effect of multi-dimensional participation of parents and the resulting progress of children in their studies when different parental resources were dedicated to them. Actively participating parents help their children in their academic development by going to schools and participating in open houses. By keenly observing the behavior of their children they can rightly judge the kind of behavior or the allocation of resources required by their children. Such caring parents can also motivate teachers to become more attentive towards a particular student, thus maintaining the cycle of parent-teacher involvement. Encourage Building up cognitive and perception abilities in a child is a major concern in the upbringing of the child. The way the parents involve their children in cognitive learning is by exposing them to different cognitively stimulating activities and materials such as books, electronic media and current events at home. This helps the child to practice all sorts of language comprehending skills at the school. The results show a remarkably positive behavior at the school and with peers.

Two parenting processes namely the Supportive Parenting (SP) and Harsh Parenting (HP) helped a lot in the research of parental involvement in their children?s education. By adjusting the levels of supportive parenting, different levels of successful outcomes were observed. Supportive parenting in even kindergarten students yielded positive results. Four measures of supportive parenting were used in the study, they were:

1. Proactive teaching.

2. Calm discussion in disciplinary encounters.

3. Warmth.

4. Interest and involvement in peer activities.

The assessments were conducted when children entered kindergarten and when they reached grade 6. There was a factor noted to hinder children?s development: family adversity. It was the result of a multipurpose negative process that included the risk of low socio-economic status, single-parenting and family stress. Child maladjustments were found to be more common in families with such adversities. No matter how much negative impacts were cast, SP was found to overcome the risks associated with family adversity. SP was strongly related to adjustment procedures in grade 6 children who had single parent family or experienced low socio-economic status (SES) in their early childhood.

In a way to socialize their children, parents adopted the techniques of calm discussion and proactive teaching. They helped lessen the behavioral problems by carrying long discussions with their children, cultivating in them a sense of respect, calmness and peace of mind. Mothers also participated actively in reducing the peer stress among their children. It is also a widely accepted fact that supportive parenting plays an important role in the children?s development of empathy, prosocial behavior and emotional competence. On the negative side, the absence of supportive parenting may be related to the development of internal problems such as anxiety and depression.

Lack of the necessary parental care and attention is the main factor for the subsequent rise in the percentage of juvenile delinquency (crime among children). The absence of parental instructions causes children to develop irreversible behavioral and emotional problems. They in order to seek attention, resort to crimes thinking that in this way they could fulfill their wishes. They may revert to uncontrolled violence if not kept an eye upon. Such criminal activities cannot be brought to a halt until their distressing symptoms of low self-esteem, depression, dysphonic mood, tension and worries, and other disturbances are relieved. And the importance of parents? role in this regard cannot be over-emphasized.

In an effort to describe parental involvement, many researchers use a term ?Transition?(Lombardi, Joan). ?Transition? is used to describe the time period in which children move from home to school, from school to after school activities, from one activity to another within a pre-school, or from pre-school to kindergarten. The untiring endeavors of teachers in the phenomenon of transition cannot be ignored. They prepared the children and their parents to face the problems of adjusting to elementary school programs that had different psychology, teaching styles and structure than the programs offered at the kindergarten level. In the elementary level schools the teachers had to face serious challenges in motivating the parents to take interest in their children?s activities. The teachers adopted different methods to involve the parents in day-to-day classroom and home activities. They used to send notes, invitation of parent-teacher meetings, invitation of parental guidance sessions and training sessions, continuously directing the parent?s attention towards their children. Patricia Brown Clark suggests that it is very important to keep the line of communication between teachers and parents open, so that the parents can interact with the teachers and get up to date information of their children?s school activities. One way to involve parents is to schedule school events and arranging classroom activities such as volunteering for libraries, acting as classroom aides or efficiently organizing lunch breaks. The teachers also opt for making phone calls at the children?s houses to keep in touch with the parents and getting to know the extent to which they are contributing towards the welfare of their children. Apart from the above activities, the teachers also assign home activities for both the parents and their children so that the parents remain indulged in their children and the children get to study at home. However, it was a bad and disappointing experience for the teachers when many of the parents failed to respond as expected. Many of the parents were so overwhelmed with their official work that they could hardly take out some time for their beloved children.

Moreover, for some parents their schoolings were not positive and character-boosting experiences, therefore they preferred to keep a distance from their children?s school as well. This made it really difficult and at times impossible for teachers to bring the parental involvement to the desired level. Nevertheless, the activities of two teachers proved greatly fruitful in making parents involved in their children. They were Carlos Valdez, an art teacher and 8th grade class sponsor, and Mike Hogan, the school?s band director. They did it by involving parents in music festivals and other school ceremonies. They proved to be great examples for the future teachers to come.

If the children?s academic development programs are to prove successful they must share two characteristics:

1) Developmentally appropriate practice:

A child?s academic progress is clearly reflected by the appropriate practice he/she administers while in school life. During transitions from pre-school to kindergarten, a child if given the exact developmentally appropriate practice tends to learn a great deal of language and playing skills. He develops a keen interest in exploring his environments and interacting (without hesitation) with his adults.

2) Supportive services:

These include the assistance that the school provides to low-income family students. The services include health care, childcare and community care. This strengthens the relation between school and children and creates a sense of security and confidence among the children. They get to learn that their communities are a part of their school since the school?s supportive services strive to help community development.

It is commonly believed that children are good self-teachers. Their self-initiated strategies help improve their expression, creativity, intellectual capabilities and extra-curricular skills. This idea is proved by the documentation of young children?s work provided by Reggio Emilia :

?The Reggio Emilia educators highlight young children?s amazing capabilities and indicate that it is through the unity of thinking and feeling that young children can explore their world, represent their ideas, and communicate with others at their highest level.?(Edwards, Pope. C, Springate, Wright.K)

The climax rests in the fact that how the parents would know that their sincere involvements are really proving worthwhile for their children. The answer lies in the attitude of the children. The degree of parental involvement can be judged by a child?s attitude towards his school subjects, his academic desires and achievements. There is a direct relationship between academic achievements and the attitude towards school. Schunk in 1981 had the following idea of aspiration or academic desires:

?Level of aspiration is defined as one?s subjective probability that he or she will reach a certain level of education.?(Abu, H. & Maher, M)

As a result children who received adequate parental concern were found to be much more confident in their academic desires and achievements than those who could not get the right amount of parental concern.
The individual involvement of mothers and fathers also plays a vital role in the behavioral development of a child. Students from one-parent household were observed to show less positive attitude towards schools and studies as compared to students from two-parent households. One study aimed at investigating parental concern showed that despite mothers? sincere endeavors, the role of fathers could not be ignored and both served as an important foundation for the future progress of the child. This can be proved from the following fact:

According to a recent report from the National Center for Educational Statistics (1997), compared to their counterparts, children with involved fathers are more likely to have participated in educational activities with their parents (e.g., to have visited a museum or a historical site with their parents in the past month), and are more likely to have access to multiple types of resources at home as well (as measured by the proportion of parents who belong to community or professional organizations, or regularly volunteer in the community). (Flouri, E. And Buchanan, A, Pg.142)

Also, the parental involvement has been discussed and implemented in terms of interventions or prevention programs, which are nothing but safety measures taken to assure healthy and perfect upbringing of the child. The study uses school-based and home-only intervention programs to find out the extent of intellectual capabilities found in children from different family backgrounds. The success of one school-based interventions can be proved from the following fact, which was a part of ?Education Service Improvement Plan 2001-2005? of Edinburgh:

?-The Scottish Executive Discipline Task Force, which studied the causes of poor behavior among pupils in schools produced a report of ?Better Behavior ? Better Learning? in June 2001. The report included 36 recommendations for action, which were then turned into an Action Plan in 2002. Many of these have implications for the Education Authority. (Craig Millar Instep Project)
