"We're going to have a lot of work to do. I don't want anybody to feel that somehow this is all going to get cleaned up overnight," the president added. "We want to make sure that people have realistic expectations. But what I can promise you is that the federal government will be working as closely as possible with the state and local officials, and we will not quit until this is done."

Christie continued to heap praise on the president for his handling of the storm.

"He has worked incredibly closely with me since before the storm hit," Christie said. "It's been a great working relationship to make sure that we're doing the jobs that people elected us to do."

Christie thanked Obama for his "personal concern and compassion" for the state.

"I heard it on the phone conversations with him, and I was able to witness it today personally," Christie said.

The political odd couple also complimented each other during a visit with victims of the storm in Brigantine, N.J., a small community northeast of Atlantic City, N.J.

"I want to just let you know that your governor is working overtime to make sure that, as soon as possible, everybody can get back to normal," Obama told displaced residents taking shelter at a local community center.

"It's really important to have the president of the United States acknowledge all the suffering that's going on here in New Jersey and I appreciate it very much," Christie told his constituents. "We're going to work together to make sure we get ourselves through this crisis."

Now, before you get all misty eyed, yes that was a wonderful thing for her to do and I am so proud of her for doing it.? Anyway, after a while, it got to be time for parents to sign up to volunteer.? Before I left the table, I gave Sydney one of my very hard looks and when she said ?what?? I replied, I?m just not sure you know what you?re getting yourself into.

So, what did I sign up for, you ask?? Not food, that?s for sure.? They were looking for people to volunteer to feed 45 people a main course, a side and a drink.? And, Coach did not describe that as sandwiches and chips.

I volunteered to?

Keep the score sheet, keep the clock, and work the gate.? All on different nights.? Each one on three different occasions.?

That is so much NOT like me.? I guess I got caught up in the fervor.? I don?t think Rob approved, and that?s all right.? He?s the one that?s going to have to hear me moan and gripe about ?what did I do?? How did I let myself sign up for this?? I can?t do this.? I?m going to have to talk to people.? What have I done??

But, you know what?? I signed up for the things that interested me the most out of what was presented.?? And, right now, I?m feeling VERY comfortable with what I have volunteered to do.?

Of course, I will be reading up on the game of basketball, because, like I told the coach before I signed up, I?ll volunteer, but I?m going to need training.? I don?t have any idea how to do these things.? And, coach said it didn?t matter.

There were only about 10 of us, signing up for about 60 volunteer opportunities.? So, I don?t feel bad about signing up to work at 9 home games.? Lots of folks didn?t volunteer for anything.?

Another thing that surprised me, and went right along with Sydney not being ashamed that she had two dads, was the fact that so many of these girls were there with a guardian.? Generally a relative.? Half the girls there are being raised by a grandparent or an older sibling.? Unconventional families are all the rage now, I guess, so we?re going to fit right in.?

Keep me in your thoughts.? I don?t always have the confidence I had last night.? I will second guess myself.? I will berate myself.? But, there?s something else about myself.? Even though I?ll be uncomfortable, I?ll be there for every single one of those volunteer opportunities?early.? And, like my Dad taught me, I?ll stay until they don?t need me anymore.

With Lena Dunham?s support, Obama?s campaign may be stronger, but I think this video better targeted already left-leaning voters just by inspiring them to show up at the polls. The clip was a little awkward, and lacked the professionalism that typically goes hand-in-hand with presidential campaigns. Due to that, I doubt the video is a game-changer for moderate to conservative voters, and even could turn those middle-ideology voters off. While Lena makes a great point?that the candidate you vote for should not be something taken lightly?at the same time, this video tended to parody the seriousness of electing the president.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The Babe. Mr. October. El Hombre. And now Kung Fu Panda.

Pablo Sandoval joined Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson and Albert Pujols as the only sluggers to hit three home runs in a World Series game, and the San Francisco Giants rolled over Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers 8-3 in Wednesday night's opener.

"I want to know what he ate for breakfast, so maybe we can get it for the rest of our team," Tigers catcher Alex Avila said.

Barry Zito ? remember him? ? won in his World Series debut, two years after poor performances caused the Giants to drop him from their postseason roster.

Coming off a Game 7 win over St. Louis on Monday night, the Giants looked fresh. Following a sweep of the Yankees and a five-day layoff, Detroit had a Rust Belt relapse reminiscent of its 7-2 loss to St. Louis in the 2006 opener.

"Man, I still can't believe it," Sandoval said. "When you're a little kid, you dream of being in the World Series."

Detroit tries to even the Series on Thursday night, sending Doug Fister to the mound against Madison Bumgarner. The winner of the opener has claimed the title 66 of 107 times, including eight of last nine. The NL is seeking to win three straight Series for first time since 1979-82.

"I think momentum is your next day's pitcher," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

A crowd of 42,855 in orange and black made the AT&T Park stands look like a large bowl of Halloween candy.

Sandoval hit a solo home run to right-center on a 95 mph 0-2 fastball at the letters in the first. He reached outside and hit a two-run, opposite-field drive to left in the third on another 95 mph pitch from Verlander, the reigning AL MVP and Cy Young winner. Then added another bases-empty shot into the center-field batter's eye in the fifth, this time on an 84 mph offspeed offering from Al Alburquerque.

Verlander was chased after allowing five runs and six hits in four innings, his shortest start this year, and he dropped to 0-3 with a 7.20 ERA in World Series play.

"I just didn't execute tonight," Verlander said.

Left off the 2010 postseason roster by the champion Giants, Zito shut out the Tigers until Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera's RBI single in the sixth. San Francisco won for the 14th straight time with Zito starting ? quite a turnaround from his image as a $126 million bust.

When Giants manager Bruce Bochy tried to call Zito on Tuesday to let him know he was getting the ball, Bochy couldn't get through. Turns out Zito had left his phone at the ballpark.

"Just the opportunity alone was mind-blowing. Me and my wife were dancing around when I heard," Zito said.

Sandoval, given his nickname for his roly-poly physique, was benched in four of five games during the 2010 World Series, his production and confidence down, his weight up. In the stands on this night, fans wearing furry panda hats celebrated with him.

"It's just a pleasure to be a part of it all," he said.

There had been only one previous three-homer game at the ballpark ? by the Dodgers' Kevin Elster in the very first game in 2000. No Giant had hit three at home since Barry Bonds back in 1994 at Candlestick Park.

Perhaps because AT&T has become a premier pitcher's park ? there were just 84 homers there this year, 25 fewer than any other big league stadium.

"I'll never forget it," Bochy said. "Three home runs on a stage like this, that's pretty impressive."

Ruth did it in 1926 and again in 1928, Jackson in 1977 and Pujols last year.

Sandoval also had success against Verlander in July, hitting the first bases-loaded triple in All-Star game history during a five-run first. The NL's 8-0 win wound up giving the Giants homefield advantage for the Series.

Marco Scutaro, the NL championship series MVP, twice hit RBI singles after doubles by Angel Pagan. NL batting champion Buster Posey contributed two hits, left fielder Gregor Blanco made diving catches to rob Cabrera and Prince Fielder, and Tim Lincecum came out of the bullpen to retire seven straight batters ? striking out five.

San Francisco kept getting good bounces, with Pagan hitting a double that hopped off the third-base bag at almost a right angle and into left field. ALCS MVP Delmon Young, meanwhile, failed to run after a tapper in front of the plate that the Giants turned into a double play.

When Sandoval faced struggling Tigers reliever Jose Valverde in the seventh, he became the first player to bat with a chance for a four-homer Series game since Ruth came up against the St. Louis Cardinals' Bill Hallahan in 1926. Ruth walked, and Cabrera stroked a single to left-center.

"We were hoping for a water shot," Giants pitcher Jeremy Affeldt said, "but he got a lousy single. Kind of killed the whole deal for us."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Of the roughly 50,000 words spoken in this month's three presidential debates, none were "climate change," ''global warming" or "greenhouse gas."

Housing was discussed in the first debate, but the word "foreclosure" was mentioned in none. Nor was gay marriage.

The 2012 presidential campaign, not just the debates, has focused heavily from the start on jobs, pushing other once high-profile issues to the sidelines. It dismays activists who have spent decades promoting environmental issues, gay rights, gun control and other topics, sometimes managing to lift them to the top tiers of national attention and debate.

With fewer than half of Americans believing that human activity contributes to global warming, according to Pew Research, President Barack Obama talks far less about climate change than he did four years ago. When he locked up the Democratic nomination in June 2008, he said future generations would recall "this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal."

Obama hasn't come close to making such claims in recent months.

Last June, 3,100 U.S. temperature records were broken and much of the nation was in drought, said Daniel Kessler, spokesman for 350 Action Fund, which tries to raise awareness of global warming. And yet the three presidential debates, and the sole vice presidential forum, produced "absolute silence on climate science," Kessler said.

He said he believes voters would respond favorably "if candidates put out a bold vision" on climate change. Instead, the topic generates far less discussion than it did four years ago. Other topics suffering downgrades in presidential campaign attention include:

GUNS

Gun rights sometimes have played big roles in U.S. elections. In 1993, for instance, the recently elected President Bill Clinton signed the Brady Bill, which required background checks on many gun buyers. A new ban on assault weapons soon followed. But it contributed to heavy Democratic congressional losses in 1994, and the law expired 10 years later.

Despite high-profile mass shootings ? including those involving Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in early 2011, and dozens of Colorado movie theater patrons in July ? questions about gun rights and gun control have generated scant discussion this year.

They weren't mentioned in the first debate between Obama and Republican Mitt Romney, which focused on domestic issues. A voter asked about assault weapons in the second, town-hall-style debate, on Oct. 16.

Obama cautiously spoke of "seeing if we can get an assault weapons ban reintroduced." Romney said he favors no new gun laws.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence criticized the lack of discussion in the first debate. After the second, it chiefly praised the woman who asked about the assault weapons ban.

IMMIGRATION

In recent years, immigration has been a big issue in national elections. Then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush backed a pathway to legal status for many illegal immigrants when he ran for president in 2000. But Republican activists and members of Congress increasingly took hard stands against illegal immigrants.

In this year's Republican primaries, Romney positioned himself to the right of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Speaker Newt Gingrich and others when it came to being tough on illegal immigration. He said illegal immigrants should be encouraged to "self-deport."

Romney has softened his rhetoric somewhat since then.

He told Hispanic leaders in June he would replace Obama's executive order allowing 800,000 young illegal immigrants to remain in the country with a long-term solution. But Romney didn't detail his plans, and immigration has played a smaller role in the general election than it did in the primary.

GAY RIGHTS

The gay rights advocacy group Human Rights Campaign recently noted on its website that questions of same-sex marriage and other gay rights issues were not mentioned in the first two presidential debates and the vice presidential debate. The final Obama-Romney faceoff was likely to be "the last window for the candidates to share their vastly different views" on the topic, the group said.

But that debate, on Oct. 22, also came and went with no mention of "gay" or "same-sex" ? or any type of marriage, for that matter.

That's not to say the nominees haven't taken stands. Early in his term, Obama helped clear the way for gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military. Last May he embraced same-sex marriage, which Romney opposes.

The gay-oriented group Log Cabin Republicans gave Romney a somewhat tepid endorsement. "If LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) issues are a voter's highest or only priority, then Governor Romney may not be that voter's choice," the Log Cabin Republicans endorsement said. The group said it believed Romney would do a better job of cutting spending and creating jobs.

Those are precisely the issues that have dominated the campaign, often in basic discussions that don't go far beyond platitudes. Both campaigns have warned of the looming "fiscal cliff" ? the package of huge tax hikes and spending cuts scheduled to hit Jan. 1 ? but no one has come close to offering a viable solution.

Meanwhile, advocates for improving schools, fighting poverty, fighting crime and other issues ? which have played big roles in past elections ? have struggled to get a word in edgewise this year.

When U.S. unemployment exceeded 10 percent in October 2009, politicians said the 2012 election would be about jobs, jobs, jobs. Three years later, that hasn't changed.

Blue Origin completes pad escape test

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? NASA's Commercial Crew Program (CCP) partner Blue Origin conducted a successful pad escape test Oct. 19 at the company's West Texas launch site in Van Horn, firing its pusher-escape motor and launching a full-scale suborbital crew capsule from a simulated propulsion module.

The test was part of Blue Origin's work supporting its funded Space Act Agreement with NASA during Commercial Crew Development Round 2 (CCDev2). Through initiatives like CCDev2, NASA is fostering the development of a U.S. commercial crew space transportation capability with the goal of achieving safe, reliable and cost-effective access to and from the International Space Station and low-Earth orbit. After the capability is matured and available to the government and other customers, NASA could contract to purchase commercial services to meet its station crew transportation needs.

"The progress Blue Origin has made on its suborbital and orbital capabilities really is encouraging for the overall future of human spaceflight," CCP Manager Ed Mango said. "It was awesome to see a spacecraft NASA played a role in developing take flight."

The suborbital crew capsule traveled to an altitude of 2,307 feet (703 meters) during the flight test before descending safely by parachute to a soft landing 1,630 feet (497 meters) away.

The pusher escape system was designed and developed by Blue Origin to allow crew escape in the event of an emergency during any phase of ascent for its suborbital New Shepard system. As part of an incremental development program, the results of this test will shape the design of the escape system for the company's orbital biconic-shaped Space Vehicle. The system is expected to enable full reusability of the launch vehicle, which is different from NASA's previous launch escape systems that would pull a spacecraft away from its rocket before reaching orbit.

"The use of a pusher configuration marks a significant departure from the traditional towed-tractor escape tower concepts of Mercury and Apollo," said Rob Meyerson, president and program manager of Blue Origin. "Providing crew escape without the need to jettison the unused escape system gets us closer to our goal of safe and affordable human spaceflight."

All of NASA's industry partners, including Blue Origin, continue to meet their established milestones in developing commercial crew transportation capabilities.

While NASA works with U.S. industry partners to develop commercial spaceflight capabilities, the agency also is developing the Orion spacecraft and the Space Launch System (SLS), a crew capsule and heavy-lift rocket to provide an entirely new capability for human exploration. Designed to be flexible for launching spacecraft for crew and cargo missions, SLS and Orion will expand human presence beyond low-Earth orbit and enable new missions of exploration into the solar system.

Head of pilots' union says latest delay in American Airlines bankruptcy helps takeover chances

DALLAS - The head of the pilots' union says the latest delay in American Airlines' bankruptcy case increases the chances that the company will be taken over, presumably by US Airways.

And Keith Wilson says the union's advisers believe that US Airways will pursue a merger, even if American's management opposes a deal.

Wilson is president of the Allied Pilots Association, which favours a merger that would have US Airways management run the combined company. Wilson made the comments Monday night in a message to American's pilots.

American parent AMR Corp. asked for another month of exclusive rights to present a turnaround plan in federal bankruptcy court. Wilson says creditors may have pushed the delay to give merger talks more time. A committee representing AMR's unsecured creditors supported the extra time.

Both airlines declined to comment. AMR and US Airways Group Inc. agreed several weeks ago to exchange confidential financial information.

American and the pilots' union are negotiating over a new contract that would replace pay and working terms that American imposed in September. The union says the sides have made progress. Talks resumed last month after American threatened to haul the union into court over what the company considers an illegal work slowdown by pilots.

Delays and cancellations soared at American during September, and the airline's on-time performance is still poor. On Monday only 58 per cent of its flights arrived on time, compared with 67 per cent at United Airlines, 72 per cent at Southwest Airlines, 88 per cent at Delta Air Lines, and 90 per cent at US Airways, according to FlightStats.com. American cancelled just one flight on Tuesday.

BBC airs unseen expose on its disgraced star

LONDON (AP) ? BBC reporters put their own bosses in the hot seat over their role in an expanding pedophilia scandal, airing footage from a previously unseen expose of one of the BBC's most popular entertainers and quizzing senior management about why they canned the bombshell program.

Monday night's powerful but often awkward broadcast centered on revelations that late children's television star Jimmy Savile was one of the country's most prolific predators, suspected of sexually assaulting more than 200 children over his decades-long career. The scandal's explosion has cut an ugly gash through the venerable broadcaster's public image, a wound made all the worse by the revelation that executives there scrapped what would have been a hard-hitting expose of Savile's misdeeds last year.

Tim Burt, a managing partner of the Stockwell Communications crisis management firm, said the BBC faces a major blow to its reputation at a time when it is entering delicate negotiations with the government about the terms of its charter.

"To have a civil war inside on a matter of editorial judgment and the handling of potentially criminal investigations could not have come at worse time," he said.

The broadcast set out to explain why the Savile investigation was never televised. The answer remains murkier than ever ? the BBC stopped short of accusing any of its bosses of a cover-up ? but viewers were given harrowing testimony about the scale of the abuse, including allegations that girls and, in at least one case, a boy, were forced to have sex with Savile in his car, his camper van, or dingy dressing rooms on BBC premises.

"I'm so full of self-disgust. I can't believe that I did such things," said Karin Ward, who described being cajoled into giving the presenter sexual favors when she was just a young teen. She said she should have tried to put a stop to it but "I didn't. None of us did."

The program was surreal in parts, not least because nearly all the children who surrounded Savile in archival footage were shown with their faces blurred out ? each one of them a potential victim of sexual abuse. Also bizarre was the fact that the BBC was effectively conducting a televised inquisition into itself. One particularly striking scene involved a journalist bombarding BBC boss George Entwistle with questions on what appeared to be his morning commute.

"I've never seen an organization do such a knocking job on itself," commented ITV journalist Kenny Toal. "Fair play to the journalists who spoke up against their bosses."

BBC editor Peter Rippon ? who stepped down temporarily only hours before the show was aired ? was hit by some of the hardest knocks. Under fire from his two reporters, he was shown to have put out a series of misleading statements about the documentary. Emails appeared to show he was enthusiastic about the expose at first, but abruptly changed his mind for reasons that remain unexplained.

Reaction was mixed, with some viewers criticizing the BBC for not having pushed its executives harder. Others congratulated the broadcaster on a compelling broadcast that must have been difficult to organize. The Mirror's deputy television editor Mark Jefferies said in a message posted to Twitter that the program was "very thorough, compelling and depressing" and which he said showed the BBC "at its best."

"Sadly it was highlighting BBC at its worst," he said.

The scandal and the alleged cover-up have already drawn unusual criticism from the prime minister.

"The nation is appalled, we are all appalled by the allegations of what Jimmy Savile did and they seem to get worse by the day," David Cameron said earlier Monday.

The BBC can expect harsh treatment at the hands of Britain's newspapers, said Bob Calver, a lecturer in broadcast journalism at Birmingham City University. He suggested that publications from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. empire, which has been shaken by revelations of widespread criminality at its newspapers, would be particularly harsh.

"The print media will not let this story go," he said. "Because BBC was not implicated in the phone hacking scandal, it was pointing the finger at the print media, which has long felt that the BBC is smug and gets special treatment. This is an opportunity for the print media to come back at them."

There seemed to be every sign of that late Monday. Murdoch's The Sun newspaper said that BBC chiefs were "accused of betraying license fee payers by misleading the public over pervert Jimmy Savile." BBC's revenues are paid by license fees from viewers.

Asked how the BBC could have avoided some of the scandal, producer Meirion Jones answered: "Very easily. By broadcasting a story about Jimmy Savile and how he was a pedophile."

Climate variability and conflict risk in East Africa measured by researchers

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? While a new study led by the University of Colorado Boulder shows the risk of human conflict in East Africa increases somewhat with hotter temperatures and drops a bit with higher precipitation, it concludes that socioeconomic, political and geographic factors play a much more substantial role than climate change.

According to CU-Boulder geography Professor John O'Loughlin, the new CU-Boulder study undertaken with the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder is an attempt to clarify the often-contradictory debate on whether climate change is affecting armed conflicts in Africa. "We wanted to get beyond the specific idea and hype of climate wars," he said. "The idea was to bring together a team perspective to see if changes in rainfall and temperature led to more conflict in vulnerable areas of East Africa."

The research team examined extensive climate datasets from nine countries in East Africa, including the Horn of Africa, between 1990 and 2009: Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda. The team also used a dataset containing more than 16,000 violent conflicts in those countries during that time period, parsing out more specific information on conflict location and under what type of political, social, economic and geographic conditions each incident took place.

The study, which included changes in precipitation and temperature over continuous six-month periods from 1949 to 2009, also showed there was no climate effect on East African conflicts during normal and drier precipitation periods or during periods of average and cooler temperatures, said O'Loughlin.

Moderate increases in temperature reduced the risk of conflict slightly after controlling for the influence of social and political conditions, but very hot temperatures increased the risk of conflict, said O'Loughlin. Unusually wet periods also reduced the risk of conflict, according to the new study.

"The relationship between climate change and conflict in East Africa is incredibly complex and varies hugely by country and time period," he said. "The simplistic arguments we hear on both sides are not accurate, especially those by pessimists who talk about 'climate wars'. Compared to social, economic and political factors, climate factors adding to conflict risk are really quite modest."

The results are being published online Oct. 22 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Co-authors on the study include CU-Boulder Research Associate Frank Witmer and graduate student Andrew Linke as well as three scientists from the National Center for Atmospheric research -- Arlene Laing, Andrew Gettelman and Jimy Dudhia. The National Science Foundation funded the study.

Much of the information on the 16,359 violent events in East Africa from 1990 to 2009 came from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Dataset, or ACLED, directed by Clionadh Raleigh of Trinity College in Dublin. The database covers individual conflicts from 1997 to 2009 in Africa, parts of Asia and Haiti -- more than 60,000 violent incidents to date. Raleigh started the data collection while earning her doctorate at CU in 2007 under O'Loughlin.

In addition, more than a dozen CU-Boulder undergraduates spent thousands of hours combing online information sources like LexisNexis -- a corporation that pioneered the electronic accessibility of legal and newspaper documents -- in order to fill in details of individual violent conflicts by East African countries from 1990 to 1997. The student work was funded by the NSF's Research Experiences for Undergraduates program.

The CU students coded each conflict event with very specific data, including geographic location coordinates, dates, people and descriptive classifications. The event information was then aggregated into months and into 100-kilometer grid cells that serve as the units of analysis for quantitative modeling.

Each conflict grid also was coded by socioeconomic and political characteristics like ethnic leadership, distance to an international border, capital city, local population size, well-being as measured by infant mortality, the extent of political rights, presidential election activity, road network density, the health of vegetation and crop conditions.

"The effects of climate variability on conflict risk is different in different countries," O'Loughlin said. "Typically conflicts are very local and quite confined. The effects of climate on conflict in Ethiopia, for example, are different than those in Tanzania or Somalia. The idea that there is a general 'African effect' for conflict is wrong."

The researchers used a variety of complex statistical calculations to assess the role of climate in violent conflict in East Africa, including regression models and a technique to uncover nonlinear influences and decrease "noise," said O'Loughlin, also a faculty member at CU-Boulder's Institute of Behavioral Science.

One component of the methods used by the team extracts predictions of individual instances of conflict from the statistical model and systematically compared them with the actual observations of conflict in the data, "a rigorous validity check," he said.

Catastrophic conflicts like those in the "Great Lakes region" -- Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo -- since the 1990s and the war with the Lord's Resistance Army led by terrorist Joseph Kony that has been running since the late 1980s in northern Uganda and neighboring regions are marked with large red swaths on the maps.

Legacies of violence are extremely important for understanding and explaining unrest, he said. "Violence nearby and prior violence in the locality, especially for heavily populated areas, are the strongest predictors of conflict."

Ongoing work is extending the study to all of sub-Saharan Africa since 1980 with a database of 63,000 violent events. Preliminary results from the work confirm the East African climate effects of higher than normal temperatures are increasing conflict risk.

Egypt prosecutor to probe election challenges

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's prosecutor general has ordered an investigation into complaints by former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq into alleged irregularities and forgery in the presidential elections he narrowly lost.

Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood scraped in ahead of Shafiq in the elections, Egypt's first freely contested presidential vote, held in multiple rounds this summer. Shafiq's complaints came a day after authorities froze his and his family's assets as part of a probe into his wealth.

Shafiq had complained that some ballots were forged, invisible ink was used during voting, and some Christians were prevented from casting ballots. He said the incidents favored Morsi.

It is not clear what the probe ordered Monday can lead to. The presidential election commission, whose decisions are unchallengeable, had earlier dismissed the same complaints from Shafiq.

Canada blocks Petronas shale deal

The BBC's correspondent in Malaysia, Jennifer Pak, says Petronas has 30 days to appeal the decision.

Canada has blocked a $5.2bn(?3.3bn) takeover bid from Malaysia's Petronas, saying it would not benefit the country.

Petronas had wanted to buy Canadian oil and gas firm Progress Energy Resources. It now has 30 days to adjust its offer.

Analysts said the move raises questions about Canada's appetite for foreign investment in key industries.

The decision also casts doubt over a $15.1bn (?9.3bn) bid for Canada's Nexen by Chinese state-owned Cnooc.

"If they can reject Petronas it doesn't look good for Cnooc," said Laban Yu, energy analyst at Jefferies in Hong Kong.

International investment

The offer from Petronas for Progress Energy Resources, worth 5.18bn Canadian dollar, was agreed by the companies in June.

However, in a statement on Friday the Canadian industry minister said the deal was not of "net benefit" to Canada.

A takeover would give Petronas access to shale gas reserves in the Montney region of British Columbia and Alberta, a resource many firms are keen to develop.

Chief executive of Progress Energy Resources, Michael Culbert, expressed the company's disappointment at the decision.

"Progress will be working over the next 30 days to determine the nature of the issues and the potential remedies," he said.

"The long-term health of the natural gas industry in Canada and the development of a new liquefied natural gas export industry are dependent on international investments such as (the one by) Petronas."

Petronas would not comment on the decision when contacted by the BBC.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) ? The final touchdown pass drew only a slight first pump from Collin Klein. It was still the third quarter, but Milan-Puskar Stadium was half-empty. Most of the West Virginia fans had seen enough of a game that had turned into a Heisman campaign ad for the Kansas State quarterback.

Klein threw for a career-high 323 yards and three touchdowns and ran for four scores as No. 4 Kansas State got little resistance from No. 17 West Virginia in a 55-14 victory Saturday night.

The Wildcats (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) made it look easy. Klein completed 19-of-21 passes, and added 41 yards rushing.

"I think we all felt comfortable tonight," he said. "The coaches did a great job of building a game plan and putting us in positions to succeed."

No doubt. The Wildcats scored on their first eight possessions, including seven straight touchdowns.

"He doesn't do anything wrong," West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said of Klein. "He's hard to tackle. He gets them in good plays. He doesn't turn the ball over. You can say what you want to about the throwing motion but it goes exactly where he wants it go. He's a good football player."

Way too good for West Virginia to stop.

It was no surprise the Mountaineers (5-2, 2-2) were awful on defense, it's been that way all season. For the second straight game, though, Geno Smith and the offense did nothing to keep it close.

Smith followed up a clunker at Texas Tech last week with an even worse game, throwing his first two interceptions of the season and finishing 21 for 32 for 143 yards. The senior has gone from Heisman Trophy front-runner to long shot in two weeks.

"We talked about it all week. Don't get impatient. Don't get impatient," Holgorsen said. "You have the ball a couple of times and you look up there and you're down 17 points and you start pressing. It's inevitable.

"We're trying to score 14 points in one play."

Kansas State made it 52-7 with 2:25 left in the third quarter when Klein hit Tyler Lockett over the middle for a 20-yard score. Klein turned toward his sideline and gave a modest shake of his fist before joining his teammates to celebrate.

By that point a long line cars was creeping out of the parking lot. The only section of the stadium that was still filled, was covered in KSU purple.

The optimism and excitement that was pumping through Morgantown a couple of weeks ago is gone.

In Manhattan, Kan., it's all good, and everything is on the table for coach Bill Snyder's team. The Wildcats are the only unbeaten team in the Big 12. Their quarterback is the Heisman front-runner. And with five games left on the schedule, the Wildcats are serious national title contenders.

The first meeting since 1931 of the new Big 12 rivals was so lopsided that by the time it was over it was hard to even remember that it started as a battle for first in the conference.

On one side was Klein, aka Optimus Klein, the Wildcats' methodical battering ram, whose passes don't look like much, but usually find their target.

On the other side was Smith, the future NFL first-round draft pick with the video game passing statistics.

But Klein got to face West Virginia's beleaguered defense, which ranks near the bottom of the Big 12 and the country in just about everything.

With the Mountaineers seemingly determined to at least stop the run early, Klein completed his first seven passes, including a 10-yard touchdown that Lockett made a stretching, toe-dragging catch on in the back corner of the end zone. That made it 10-0 in the first.

The K-State running game went to work on the third drive and Klein finished it off with a 1-yard plunge.

Klein made it 24-0 on the next Kansas State drive, taking an option keeper 8 yards. That gave him 39 rushing touchdowns over the last two seasons to break an FBS record held by Eric Crouch of Nebraska and Stacey Robinson of Northern Illinois.

Tavon Austin finally put a little life back into the sellout crowd when he took the ensuing kickoff back 100 yards for a score with 4:12 left in the first half.

The bad news for West Virginia was that it gave the Wildcats more than enough time to get the ball back in the end zone ? which they did.

Klein hit Lockett deep for 44 yards and a few plays later he finished off the drive with another 1-yard dive.

The first half onslaught went like this for Kansas State: five possessions, 346 yards, four touchdowns and a field goal. The offense was unstoppable and the defense was just as good, holding Smith to 62 yards by flooding the secondary with defenders and taking away the down field throws.

Maybe the pressure of having to score every time he touches the ball has gotten to Smith, but that trip to New York for the Heisman Trophy presentation, which seemed like a lock after the Mountaineers won at Texas, is now in serious doubt.

As for Klein and the Wildcats, they will face tougher tests. The gap between the top and the bottom of the Big 12 doesn't seem all that wide. But they have now won three conference road games, including at Oklahoma. They came into the weekend fourth in BCS standings, behind Alabama, Florida and Oregon.

With their 73-year-old coach pushing all the right buttons and their happily married quarterback making all the right plays, the Wildcats might be due for a promotion.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) ? Police searched for a gunman who wore a painter's mask when he set fire to a home before going on a shooting spree early Saturday, killing a father and his 4-year-old son and injuring a woman and two other young children near Los Angeles.

A SWAT team set up a perimeter and was using dogs to search for the attacker, who may have lived in a rear house on the property, Inglewood Police Chief Mark Fronterotta said.

Five neighboring houses in Inglewood were evacuated as officers searched residences and the trunks of cars. Other nearby residents were told to remain inside with their doors locked. The suspect was described as armed and dangerous.

Investigators were trying to determine whether he fled or remained in the house as it burned.

The man wore a painter's mask apparently to shield his identity, Fronterotta said.

The gunman had known the family for at least eight years, according to Capt. Tom Richards of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Television footage showed a home gutted by flames and a plume of smoke rising over the residential neighborhood early Saturday.

Detectives determined the suspect set the house ablaze at about 4 a.m. before opening fire with a weapon, Fronterotta said. Earlier the chief said the blaze was started after the gun attack.

The 28-year-old woman, said to be the children's mother, was being treated for gunshot wounds. She was in critical condition, as was a 6-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the pelvis and a 7-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to a department statement.

After being shot, the mother carried the wounded 4-year-old to a neighbor's yard.

"This extraordinary rescue attempt by the mother occurred in spite of the fact that she had gunshot wounds to both legs," the statement said.

The 30-year-old father was shielding two of his children when he was shot, the chief said. He died in surgery, as did the 4-year-old boy.

An 8-year-old boy was uninjured.

Police have no motive. But a neighbor, Judy Castellanos, told the Los Angeles Times that the suspect lived in one of three units on the property and described him as "really weird" and "dangerous." She said he had not paid his rent for years and that a new property owner had been trying to evict him.

"He had been asked to leave by the end of this month," Castellanos told the newspaper, adding that he was reclusive and would not let anyone look inside his home. Castellanos, who said her daughter is related to the man who was killed, did not give the suspect's name.
