Obama invites congressional leaders to cliff talk

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A deadline looming, President Barack Obama will meet with congressional leaders at the White House on Friday in search of a compromise to avoid a year-end "fiscal cliff" of across-the-board tax increases and deep spending cuts.

The development capped a day of growing urgency in which Obama returned early from a Hawaiian vacation while lawmakers snarled across a partisan divide over responsibility for gridlock on key pocketbook issues. Speaker John Boehner called the House back into session for a highly unusual Sunday evening session.

Adding to the woes confronting the middle class was a pending spike of $2 per gallon or more in milk prices if lawmakers failed to pass farm legislation by year's end.

Four days before the deadline, the White House disputed reports that Obama was sending lawmakers a scaled-down plan to avoid the fiscal cliff of tax increases and spending cuts.

Administration officials confirmed the Friday meeting at the White House in a bare-bones announcement that said the president would "host a meeting."

An aide to Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said the Kentucky lawmaker "is eager to hear from the president."

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner issued a statement that said the Ohio Republican would attend and "continue to stress that the House has already passed legislation to avert the entire fiscal cliff and now the Senate must act."

While there was no guarantee of a compromise, Republicans and Democrats said privately elements of any agreement would likely include an extension of middle class tax cuts with increased rates at upper incomes as well as cancellation of the scheduled spending cuts. An extension of expiring unemployment benefits, a reprieve for doctors who face a cut in Medicare payments and possibly a short-term measure to prevent dairy prices from soaring could also become part of a year-end bill, they said.

That would postpone politically contentious disputes over spending cuts for 2013.

Top Senate leaders said they remain ready to seek a last-minute agreement. Yet there was no legislation pending and no sign of negotiations in either the House or the Senate on a bill to prevent the tax hikes and spending cuts that economists say could send the economy into a recession.

Far from conciliatory, the rhetoric was confrontational and at times unusually personal.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused Boehner of running a dictatorship, citing his refusal to call a vote on legislation to keep taxes steady for most while letting them rise at upper incomes. The bill "would pass overwhelmingly," Reid predicted, and said the Ohio Republican won't change his mind because he fears it might cost him re-election as speaker when the new Congress convenes next week.

Boehner seems "to care more about keeping his speakership than keeping the nation on a firm financial footing," he said in remarks on the Senate floor.

A few hours later, McConnell expressed frustration and blamed the standoff on Obama and the Democrats. "Republicans have bent over backwards. We stepped way, way out of our comfort zone," he said, referring to GOP offers to accept higher tax rates on some taxpayers.

"We wanted an agreement, but we had no takers. The phone never rang, and so here we are five days from the new year and we might finally start talking," McConnell said.

Still, he warned: "Republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything the Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff."

Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Boehner, responded in a similar vein to Reid's comments. "Harry Reid should talk less and legislate more if he wants to avert the fiscal cliff. The House has already passed legislation to do so," he said, referring to a measure that extends existing cuts at all income levels.

Addressing the GOP rank and file by conference call, Boehner said the next move is up to the Senate, which has yet to act on House-passed bills to retain expiring tax cuts at all income levels and replace across-the-board spending cuts with targeted savings aimed largely at social programs.

"The House will take this action on whatever the Senate can pass - but the Senate must act," he said, according to a participant in the call.

Boehner told Republican lawmakers the House would convene on Sunday evening. Majority Leader Eric Cantor said the House could be in session until Jan. 2, the day before the new congress is sworn in.

The risk of higher milk prices stems from the possibility that existing farm programs will expire at year's end, and neither chamber of Congress has scheduled a vote on even a temporary extension to prevent a spike. There have been unverified estimates that the cost to consumers of a gallon of milk could double without action by Congress.

The president flew home from Hawaii overnight after speaking with top congressional leaders.

Before leaving the White House last Friday, the president had called on lawmakers to pass scaled-down legislation that prevents tax increases for the middle class, raises rates at upper incomes and renews expiring unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless. He said he still supports a more sweeping measure to include spending cuts to reduce deficits, but said they could wait until the new year.

That capped an unpredictable week in which Boehner pivoted away from comprehensive deficit reduction talks with Obama to an aborted attempt to push legislation through the House that retained existing tax levels except above $1 million. Anti-tax Republicans rebelled at raising rates on million-dollar earners, and Boehner backpedaled and canceled the planned vote.

Without congressional action, current tax rates will expire on Dec. 31, resulting in a $536 billion tax increase over a decade that would touch nearly all Americans. In addition, the military and other federal departments would have to begin absorbing about $110 billion in spending cuts.

Failure to avoid the "fiscal cliff" doesn't necessarily mean tax increases and spending cuts would become permanent, since the new Congress could pass legislation cancelling them retroactively after it begins its work next year.

But gridlock through the end of the year would mark a sour beginning to a two-year extension of divided government that resulted from last month's elections in which Obama won a new term and Republicans retained their majority in the House.

The tax issue in particular has been Obama's first test of muscle after his re-election in November. He ran for a new term calling for higher taxes on the wealthy, and postelection public opinion polls show continued support for his position.

Boehner's decision to support higher rates on million-dollar earners marked a significant break with long-standing GOP orthodoxy, but the resistance among his rank and file so far has trumped him as well as any mandate the president claims.

Fancy bullet points in Word and PowerPoint ? Business ...

Q. How can I create my own custom bullet points?

A. In Word and PowerPoint, you can create bullet points that look like your company?s logo or follow a holiday theme. Here?s how.

  1. Apply bullet point formatting to your list in Word or PowerPoint.
  2. Right-click your list and choose Bullets, then Define New Bullets at the bottom of the fly out menu.
  3. Click the Picture button.
  4. Now, you can choose one of the pictures shown or choose the import button from the lower right corner of the dialog box and find the picture of your choice.

I recommend creating a small picture of your desired image in Paint to make sure the details wouldn?t make a smaller bullet look messy. Then, import that one.

Finding the time to focus - Future of Real Estate Marketing - Inman ...

Social media and apps are so 2012. Lucky for us, 2013 is right around the corner. It?s time to focus on more than just Facebook, Twitter or the latest apps out there. We need to focus on designing your business. What are the things that you, as an agent or broker, struggle with? Is it that we are afraid of change? It?s time we embrace our fears and go at them head on. Maybe these things can equate to better business and productivity practices. We have a huge community of people within our reach, in and out of the real estate world, professionals that have made Evernote their hub for going paperless, digital and IN the cloud.

Let?s start putting the focus on these things now. Just like everything else, Evernote is what you make of it. It?s time to get your gears going and think about how this one tool could support everything you have planned for your 2013.

My interview with Stacey Harmon is a two part series and man, are you in for a treat! We talk about Evernote, 2013 and more importantly productivity and focusing on what?s going to matter the most.

??

Stacey Harmon is a national speaker and Principal of Harmon Enterprises where she helps [mostly] real estate folks build business with social media and shows them how to apply technology in order to be more ef?cient. Stacey uses Evernote to create a GTD workflow that helps her be more effective and efficient in her work and her life.

Stacey, what do you think are the biggest struggles that real estate agents have?
I think that agents are constantly interrupted and constantly distracted and that?s a disruptive process in addition to the fact that they?re forgetting data. We?re all getting input from both analog and digital means at a rate that we never have before. So it?s no longer just voicemail and email now they?re getting texts, faxes and conversations with people, Facebook messages. They need to create a centralized digital hub that allows for them to comprehend or at least reference all that?s relevant to a particular transaction. Evernote can be that solution because it is so ubiquitous.

How do you do business Stacey? What are your thoughts on productivity?
One of the things that has interested me so much in productivity is it?s very inline with how I?ve always run my life. One of the things I?ve noticed as a social media trainer, is that people are overwhelmed and the issue?s NOT that they can?t grasp Facebook or Twitter or any of these channels, it?s 40 more channels that they already have to tack on to what they?re already busy with.

Technology has really revolutionized how I personally am doing business. How im doing business now is totally different than five years ago and it?s not just social media. It?s that these technology changes have evolved my process. When agents focus on that and figure out how to have more time and peace, they can figure out what they need to focus on. That might be the Facebook learning curve or how to Tweet or how to find time to blog.

Productivity is really the root issue, not these other keeping up with Joneses in terms of apps. It used to be this is the hot new app and what I have found is I actually have a suite of apps that are the foundation of my producitivy and my business and enable me to make intellegient decisions about these new technologies. I don?t need to jump off to the next thing anymore although the things I?m using now WERE the hot new thing at one point between 2008 and now. But it?s very stablized. I have a unit of technologies with Evernote really being my hub. They?re working together and are a packaged situation that you could put all around and deploy in different teams.

Tell us how you got started with Evernote and becoming an Evernote Ambassador.
It?s got to be Agent Reboot. I?m sure I heard about Evernote at an Agent Reboot years ago. I downloaded it. I probably have the typical story. Everybody thinks ?that?s interesting? they download it, they look at it. They think ?hmm I haven?t figured out how to exactly use this? and they might decide to come back to it at some point. I?ve had Evernote for several years, but it was a process of understanding of how it truly can be integrated into my life. When I read a book this year called Getting Things Done by David Allen, I had it click for me.

I said, I could deploy this philosophy in this cloud based note taking system called Evernote. And when I married those, my whole life and productivity had changed and I got back to being organized. I became far more productive and calm about all of this. I?m not thinking there?s less to do, but I?m more focused on what it is that I need to do. So that led to me developing a system, it made Evernote my most essential application in my life. I love Facebook, I train on Facebook but that?s a marketing tool for me. Evernote is the center of both my personal and my professional life. So, I had this passion for Evernote and I was motivated to interact with others. I applied to be an ambassador and was selected!

Ambassadors are passionate power users who are really evangelic about it. We love to teach why it?s so meaningful for us and they have an expert for a particular area. So I?ve got GTD (getting things done) but there?s a crafting, a cooking, a productivity, there?s paperless, a mobile. There are over 50 ambassadors across the globe. It?s awesome. It?s really awesome (Stacey even has her home office painted Evernote green! Perhaps by accident, but she swears it was meant to be).

Why is Evernote so important to not only your business, but your life?
The reason Evernote is so important to me, it is my absolute hub of my entire life and my mission is to get absolutely everything that I think or come into contact with digitally into Evernote. I don?t manage my life in email anymore, I manage it in Evernote. I forward emails if I need to to Evernote. And now my bills are totally paperless, I?ve cancelled everything because it all gets sucked into Evernote where I then pay it through my online banking and then put it into a shared folder that my accountant in Austin can log into. It?s amazing!

And because of the searchability, it automatically creates a searchable record. I combine that with when I travel, or in an agent?s case, If you?re having lunch with a client, they can create a new note right from their phone, use the camera feature within Evernote to take a picture of their receipt, write a note about who it?s with, and that goes right into my bookkeepers shared folder who gets a notification. I toss my receipt, it?s paperless and it?s been saved for my taxes. Totally paperless and revolutionary.

I used to be an Outlook junkie and to convert to Gmail was a massive change because of the folder structure. I had replicated an entire labeling and sub labeling system and when I came to Evernote, it was revolutionary because my email, like right now I have 3 emails in my inbox because they?ve just come in. That?s it. I?ll process them and they go into Evernote. Each evernote account free or premium has a unique email address associated with it. The tip I tell people, is I created a contact called Evernote Upload and I forward my emails to Evernote Upload. You can Tweet into Evernote also by including @myen at the end of a tweet too. I?m constantly managing it. It?s Evernote that acts as my digital hub. I have my world with me wherever I am.

(In part two of my Q&A with Stacey we talk business planning and strategizing with Evernote, Evernote Trunk, sushi and more so stay tuned!)

Frugal Family Tree: Don't Let a Greedy Grinch Ruin Your Holidays

Frugal Family Tree: Don't Let a Greedy Grinch Ruin Your Holidays

Don't Let a Greedy Grinch Ruin Your Holidays

Over the years I have heard many stories of greedy?Grinch?trying to steal someones Christmas. It makes me so sad! Well we can all?thwart?the?Grinch?with being aware of our own home security. We all get busy in the rush of holiday shopping, friends and family visiting and taking road trips. A few simple but often?forgettable?things can help decrease your odds of Grinch deciding your home will be his next target.

Remembering to lock doors and windows before you go out shopping, even if its for a quick trip to the store. Leaving a light on while your out to let it appear someone is there. Turn off your Christmas tree lights and be sure to close the blinds. Open blinds letting your Christmas tree be seen is beautiful but also a lure to a greedy Grinch.?

Leaving the porch light on is another small but sometimes?forgettable?thing that can help keep your home less of a target. Having motion activated exterior lights is also a good idea. If you are planning to go on a trip have your neighbors gather your mail and newspaper. Don't forget to lock the doors that lead to your home from the garage. I often have forgotten that one myself. A garage can be easier to get into and if your home door is lock often the Grinch can't get further than your garage.?

In the delight of the Holiday season just be sure to be take a few extra steps to make sure you have a bit more home?security.

Here is a cute?article about how Santa can perhaps be the slickest break in artist of them all! (but we?don't?mind?him, he leaves presents in exchange for cookies and milk!)

10 things you never knew about the North Pole

9 hrs.

Say "North Pole" and most people think of Santa, but did you know that the region is a hotbed for international intrigue? Or that it has a special connection to the unicorn? Just in time for Christmas, here are 10 fun facts about the most mythical place on earth.

There's more to the North Pole than just snow and Santa. Ever since it was discovered by Robert E. Peary, Matthew Henson, and four Eskimo companions back in 1909, the North Pole has been a place of international intrigue???did you know several countries are now fighting over vast underground oil reserves in the Arctic Circle? You can go see for yourself with expedition voyages or even spend the night in a hotel made entirely of ice???try the IceHotel in Jukkasj?rvi, Sweden, or stay overnight at the Aurora Ice Museum in Fairbanks, Alaska, for a unique twist on the average igloo.?

Here, 10 more facts about the North Pole that may surprise you:

There are two North Poles
Unlike the South Pole, which lies over the continent of Antarctica, there is no land beneath the North Pole but more of a floating Arctic ice sheet that expands during colder months and shrinks to half its size in the summer. To complicate things even more, there are two different definitions of the North Pole. The first is the north magnetic pole, which is, quite literally, a magnetic phenomenon which changes daily depending on changes under the Earth's crust. Additionally, there is a north terrestrial pole, which is the fixed point that references the top of the Earth. Regardless of how you define the North Pole, global warming continues to be a problem here???as the polar ice caps melt, the sea levels rise, eliminating the land that polar bears and other wildlife depend on for survival.?

It's at the center of an international controversy right now
Did you know 30 percent of the world's untapped oil reserves are located in the Arctic Circle? The U.S. Geological Survey says that amount could actually be higher, since so much of the region has yet to be explored. Complicating matters is the fact that multiple countries lay claim to the Arctic Circle???Russia, Canada, Norway, Denmark (via Greenland), and the United States (via Alaska). Each country is allowed to explore potential oil reserves within 200 miles of their coastlines, but in 2007, Russia used a mini-submarine to plant the country's flag on the floor of the Arctic Ocean in an attempt to claim the region and its natural resources, a move that was rejected by the U.N. as the countries continue to work toward a solution.?

The North Pole has seasons
Just like everywhere else on Earth, the temperature varies here depending on the time of year. The North Pole is warmest in July, if by warm you mean it's actually freezing???32 degrees. If that gives you the shivers, brace yourself. Temperatures in February drop to a bone-chilling 31 degrees below zero. The amount of light each day depends on the time of year, too. Alaska as well as Norway and the other Arctic Circle countries each face six months of broad daylight and six months of almost total darkness because of the angle at which this top portion of the Earth receives sunlight.?

More from Budget Travel:

Yet, it is not the coldest place in the world
It might come as a shock, but even with temperatures with a high of just 32 degrees, the North Pole is not the coldest place on Earth. The South Pole is (in winter temperatures average -76 degrees F). Unlike the North Pole, the South Pole sits on top of a thick sheet of ice, which in turn sits on top of a piece of land???Antarctica. At more than 9,000 feet above sea level, Antarctica is also the world's tallest continent. The North Pole, on the other hand, is made up of a thin Arctic ice sheet that sits barely a foot above sea level???a fact that allows the landscape to absorb heat from the surrounding Arctic Ocean.?

There is life up there
While the conditions may be considered too tough for most humans, there are native Inuit tribes living in northern Canada and Alaska. The outer reaches of the Arctic Circle are a great place to see polar bears in the wild. Keep an eye out for other Arctic dwellers like Orca, Humpback, and Beluga whales, the arctic fox, and Svalbard reindeer. This isn't the only place to see reindeer in the world; a reindeer herd in the U.K. inhabits the Cairngorm Mountains of northern Scotland. One animal you won't see in the North Pole is the penguin. They live in the South Pole. Several species of flying penguin-like birds called auks, guillemots, and puffins can be seen in the Arctic Circle, though.?

Santa Claus is not the only legendary character in the North Pole
Did you know that the creature that inspired myths about unicorns comes from the North Pole? The narwhal, a small whale that lives in the chilly waters of the Arctic Circle, has a six-to-10-foot long tusk, a trait that earned it the nickname "unicorn of the sea." Back in the 16th century, they were often believed to possess magical powers that could be used to cure diseases. Demand was high, and legend has it that Queen Elizabeth I shelled out 10,000 pounds to get her hands on her very own narwhal tusk. Nowadays, narwhal populations are on the decline, due to hunting (Inuit peoples use the meat, tusks, and vitamin-C-rich skin in their everyday lives), climate change, and fishing for halibut, their main source of food.?

Santa's magical workshop isn't in the North Pole proper???but it is nearby
Shh! Don't tell the kids, but Santa's Workshop isn't really in the North Pole???it's in Finnish Lapland. You can visit Santa Claus Village in the Finnish town of Rovaniemi year round, send letters to and from his post office (they'll bear the official postmark of the Arctic Circle), and spend time exploring Santa Park, a series of Christmas-themed caves where you can meet jolly old St. Nick and his elves. You can even visit Santa's reindeer at the onsite Sirmakko Reindeer Family Farm. If Finnish Lapland seems a little out of reach, Santa also has a satellite workshop in the holiday-themed town of North Pole, Alaska where the streets have names like Kris Kringle, Mistletoe, Donner, and Blitzen.

If you would rather write to Santa than visit his workshops, the U.S. Postal Service will postmark letters from Santa Claus as long as they are received by December 10th each year. Simply mail your letters to North Pole Postmark Postmaster, 41-41 Postmark Drive, Anchorage, Alaska 99530 with "Santa, North Pole" marked as the return address. If time is of the essence, you can always email Santa??he'll answer it right away. On Christmas Eve, use the Santa Tracker North Pole Command Center app ($1.99) to keep an eye on Santa's progress.?

You can vacation there
While not exactly a budget destination, you can embark on your own Arctic adventure. Quark Expeditions offers a wide variety of cruising expeditions ranging from the Spitsbergen Explorer, an 11-day cruise around the Norwegian island (from $4,995 per person) to The Ultimate Arctic Adventure, which sails from Russia to the 90-degree north spot that represents the North Pole, visits Franz Josef Land, and tours the Arctic Ocean (from $23,995 per person). Go from June to mid-July to see the polar bears and walrus hunting in their own natural habitat, from mid-July to mid-August to see flowers and other arctic flora in bloom, or from mid-August to September as birds begin to migrate South.

There?are hot springs up there
If you are in the frigid Arctic Circle, you'll need to find a way to warm up.?Chena Hot Springs, located about an hour outside Fairbanks has a natural geothermal hot spring in a rock lake surrounded by nature. The hot springs are open from 7 a.m. to midnight, giving you plenty of time to soak and get a front row seat for the Aurora Borealis (best viewed between August and May). You can also stay at the Chena Hot Springs Resort ($65 a night to room in a Mongolia-style yurt, or stay in a room at the resort for from $189 a night). A number of hot springs can also be found in Norway's Svalbard Islands, in Iceland (the Landmannalaugar Hot Springs is well-known), and in Russia??? Scientific American profiled the hot springs in Oymyakon, Siberia, the coldest town on Earth.?

There is a North Pole marathon every year
The North Pole Marathon bills itself as the World's Coolest Marathon, and with an average wind chill temperature of 22 degrees below zero, they'd be right. It's happened every year since 2002???in 2011, 255 people from 38 nations around the world braved the conditions to compete in the 26.2-mile marathon race on top of a floating Arctic ice shelf. Competitors are transported to an international North Pole Camp on the polar ice shelf to start the race. And they layer up-thermal layers, windproof pants, gloves, two pairs of socks, and even goggles are necessary. The next North Pole Marathon takes place on April 9, 2013, and costs a pretty penny???about $15,561 for the entry fee that includes accommodations in Spitsbergen, Greenland, before and after the race, flights to and from the North Pole Camp, helicopter flights within the polar region, medals, and a commemorative DVD of the race. But the bragging rights are priceless.

Bombing kills 4, wounds 11 in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? An explosion at a shop selling CDs killed 4 people in a town northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Saturday.

Police officials say a bomb hidden in a plastic bag exploded near the shop Saturday afternoon in the town of Qazaniyah. Eleven people were wounded in the attack, and the shop was completely destroyed. Qazaniyah is 180 kilometers (110 miles) northeast of Baghdad.

A medic in a nearby hospital confirmed the death toll. All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to brief reporters.

Violence has ebbed in Iraq, but insurgent attacks are still frequent.

The attack comes in the midst of growing political uncertainty.

Iraq's president Jalal Talabani, who was working to ease tensions between Iraq's Shiite Arab-led government and the Kurdish minority, suffered a stroke earlier this week and was flown to Germany for treatment. And on Thursday, Iraqi security forces arrested at least 10 guards assigned to the finance ministry, angering the Sunni minister and his political allies.

In the northern Kurdish region, Sunni parliament speaker, Osama al-Nujaifi met with the leader of the self-ruled Kurdish region, Massoud Barzani in order to discuss their response to the growing crisis.

In a statement after their meeting, both sides expressed their discontent with the arrests, calling on the central government to take into consideration the "delicate period Iraq is going through."

EU Issues Formal Objections Against Samsung For Patent Abuse

apple-samsungThe European Commission has delivered a "statement of objections" to Samsung's leadership, in which it claims that Samsung was abusing its standard-essential patents in preventing Apple from making use of the same. Providing written notice is the next step in the EC's investigation of Samsung, which began due to the Korean company's many injunction requests and lawsuits filed in EU member states against Apple, and which isn't going away despite Samsung having dropped all of its injunction requests in EU countries.

Pre-order the ASUS built Google Nexus 7 audio dock for $39.99

Last week, we alerted you to a great holiday gift idea for those with the Google Nexus 7, the ASUS built audio dock for the tablet. We even passed along a YouTube video to show you the dock in action, although it has since been taken down. At the time, we noted the dock wasn't on the ASUS America web site and hoped that it would soon find its way to the U.S. Here we are nearly a week later and the audio dock is now available for pre-order in the states.

A retailer named B&H Photo is taking pre-orders of the ASUS Audio dock for the Google Nexus 7 with a price tag of $39.99. What's up dock? There is a micro USB port and a 3.5mm earphone jack. Because there is no shipping or delivery date on the site, you might see this for the Google Nexus 7, order it, and still be waiting for it to arrive on December 26th. But that's your call.

Zappos' 10-Hour Long Customer Service Call Sets Record

It appears Zappos has a unique definition of good customer service.

The online shoe and apparel retailer broke its personal record for longest customer service phone call on December 8 with a conversation that lasted 10 hours and 29 minutes, spokesperson Diane Coffey stated in an email to The Huffington Post. Shockingly, Zappos doesn't view the incident as bad news.

A member of Zappos' Customer Loyalty Team was apparently just following protocol when he or she took the record-setting phone call. For Zappos, the lengthy conversation is proof of the company's dedication to its customers.

Believe it or not, the representative wasn?t even helping the caller with a customer service problem, per se. Instead, the Zappos' employee was mostly speaking with the caller about what it's like to live in the Las Vegas area. Although the discussion may have veered off the topic of clothes and shoes, Coffey stated that the conversation did eventually lead to a sale of a pair of Ugg boots.

The team member was able to take breaks periodically throughout the call, according to Coffey.

A 2007 study showed that American call centers for companies like Zappos? collectively receive 43 billion calls a year, according to CBS News.

In 2011, FastCustomer found that Continental Airlines is guilty of putting customers on hold for the longest amount of time with an average wait time of 13 minutes. In fact, five of the 10 companies with the longest wait times were airlines.

Fortunately, it's likely that Zappos customers face shorter hold times than customers who call companies that use automated answering systems. Stella Service found that the automated answering services put customers on hold for one minute longer than real people do.

So why would a company use an automated system? According to Emily Yellin, author of "Your Call Is (Not That) Important to Us," customer service representatives cost about $7.50 per call whereas an automated system only costs 35 cents.

If you do get lonely this holiday season and need someone to talk to, Amazon, Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters and Ralph Lauren are among other online retailers that employ real people to answer phone calls, according to Time Business & Money.

UPDATE: After this story was published, Jeffrey Lewis, Zappos Customer Loyalty Team supervisor, reached out with the following statement: ?Zappos?s first core value is deliver wow through service, and we feel that allowing our team members the ability to stay on the phone with a customer for as long as they need is a crucial means of fulfilling this value.?

Richard Baum dies at 72; China expert at UCLA

Richard Baum, a leading China expert at UCLA who founded a lively and influential Internet forum used by hundreds of scholars, diplomats, journalists and government officials to follow ideas and trends in contemporary Chinese politics, died Friday at his Westwood home. He was 72.

Baum had cancer, said his son, Matthew.

The political scientist was the author of five books, including "Burying Mao: Chinese Politics in the Age of Deng Xiaoping" (1994), considered a definitive work on the transformation of China in the decades immediately after the communist revolutionary leader's 1976 death.

During an academic career spanning four decades, Baum traveled to China more than three dozen times, including for a period leading up to the violent clashes at Tiananmen Square in 1989. Earlier that year he had been among a small group of scholars consulted by President George H.W. Bush before his first presidential visit to the country.

In the 1990s, building on a small email network of professional contacts, Baum launched Chinapol, a private, Web-based discussion group that has become required reading for China watchers around the world. With more than 1,300 members in 27 countries, including China, it has fostered debates on hot topics like China's economic recovery, spurred news coverage of human rights cases and provided early information on fast-breaking events like the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

Chinapol's admirers include New Yorker correspondent Evan Osnos, who described it as a "peerless" resource for professionals interested in Chinese affairs. "I'm one of the many who rely on it as a sort of continuous kaffeeklatsch with knowledgeable people around the globe," he wrote in a 2009 blog post for the magazine.

Baum was "somebody who from a very early point understood the potential networking power of the Internet," said Clayton Dube, executive director of USC's U.S.-China Institute, who knew Baum for 25 years and now will help moderate the electronic forum with Richard Gunde, a retired UCLA China expert. "What is taught in so many places and also what is read, heard or seen about China has been profoundly impacted by Chinapol."

The former director of UCLA's Center for Chinese Studies, Baum was a popular media commentator whose insights on the intricacies of Chinese politics were often heard or seen on CNN, the BBC, Voice of America and National Public Radio and in newspapers from the South China Morning Post to the Los Angeles Times.

Born in Los Angeles on July 8, 1940, Baum was the son of a film technician and a seamstress. Growing up, he wrote in his 2010 memoir "China Watcher: Confessions of a Peking Tom," his closest encounters with Chinese culture involved Saturday matinees featuring Charlie Chan and Fu Manchu and "the egg rolls at Madame Wu's Cantonese Garden."

He stumbled into his life's work while a UCLA senior, when he took a class on Chinese government and politics to fulfill a major requirement. He wound up teaching that class years later after joining the faculty in 1968.

After earning his bachelor's degree in political science from UCLA in 1962, Baum went to UC Berkeley, where he received a master's in 1963 and a doctorate in 1970, in political science.

While working on his doctorate, he spent a year in Taiwan to study Mandarin, his mastery of which he soon found was sorely deficient. He, his then-wife, Carolyn, and their infant son spent their first night in a brothel, which Baum had mistaken for a hotel.

The highlight of his Taiwan sojourn came at a Taipei think tank, where he discovered a "dirty books" room reserved for intelligence reports on the Chinese Communist Party. The documents that he found most riveting described struggles at the highest levels of the party over Mao's Cultural Revolution. Realizing the potential for original scholarship, Baum "borrowed" the documents without permission, made copies and returned them before the librarian noticed they were missing. He launched his scholarly career with a paper analyzing the conflicts detailed in the reports.

In 1994, Baum was teaching a course in Japan when he created a small email network of about 30 China scholars in various countries. Within a year the network had 100 members. He converted it to a listserv in 1999.

Members were admitted after careful screening and were kept in line by what Kenneth Lieberthal, a Brookings Institution senior fellow who worked in the Clinton administration, called Baum's "strong whip hand" ? rules that require users to keep Chinapol discussions confidential and refrain from personal attacks.

To maintain civil discourse, Baum "often handed out 'yellow cards' and 'red cards' to those who violated the rules," said James Mann, a former Times correspondent and author of three books about U.S.-China relations. "His obsession was to make sure that, amid the intense arguments about China, everyone was polite to everyone else."

Xiao Qiang, a MacArthur Award-winning human rights activist and founder of China Digital Times, a bilingual news aggregator based at UC Berkeley, said Baum's vigilance helped Chinapol thrive. "I have seen disputes and conflicts on other lists that have become very disruptive and the quality of information goes downhill. But Chinapol has been kept useful for more than 15 years. That's amazing."

Baum's first marriage, to Carolyn Paller, ended in divorce. He is survived by his wife, Karin Joffe, whom he married in 2008; two children from his first marriage, Matthew, of Boston, and Kristen, of San Diego; a brother, Steven, of Los Angeles; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at UCLA's Faculty Center at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19.

Recreation opportunities available throughout holiday season ...

December 20, 2012 : By Drew Menard/Liberty University News Service

With the absence of more than 12,000 residential students for winter break, much of Liberty University?s dining and recreational offerings will be closed for the holidays, but there are still opportunities to get a taste of excitement or enjoy family fun on campus.

Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre, the only year-round snowless ski slope of its kind in North America, will continue to offer skiing, snowboarding, and tubing during holiday hours: Monday through Friday noon to 10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-10 p.m., and Sunday 2 p.m.?10 p.m., with the exception of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. For those who prefer to get extreme indoors, the Liberty Mountain Skate Park located in the Candlers Station shopping center, will have the same hours.

The LaHaye Ice Center will be open for ice skating Dec. 26 from noon-5 p.m.; Dec. 27, noon-3:30 p.m.; Dec. 28-29, noon-3 p.m. and 6:30-8 p.m.; and Dec. 30, 1-3 p.m.

Sports fans are able to catch the Flames men?s basketball team in action at home Dec. 21 and 28. Liberty hosts the Milligan Buffaloes in the first matchup and Union College to close out 2012 play in the Vines Center. Both games tipoff at 7 p.m.

Campus will look as alive and energetic as ever Dec. 30-31 as students are invited to ring in the New Year at Winterfest. Participants can jam to live tunes from some of today?s hottest Christian artists, including TobyMac, Red, and Casting Crowns. The event also features dynamic Christian speakers to challenge students in their faith. Winterfest exposes guests to all that campus has to offer, including its exciting recreational activities like indoor soccer, rock climbing, ice skating, and extreme winter sports at the Snowflex Centre.

'Constant reminder': Newtown holds third day of funerals

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? For a third straight day Wednesday, funeral processions rolled through a grieving Connecticut town trying to make sense of the massacre of 20 first-graders and six adults in an elementary school less than two weeks before Christmas.

Dr. Joseph Young, an optometrist, said he has already been to one funeral and plans to attend two or three more.

"The first few days, all you heard was helicopters and now at my office all I hear is the rumble of motorcycle escorts and funeral processions going back and forth throughout the day," he said. "It's difficult. It's just a constant reminder."

Most students in Newtown went back to school Tuesday except those from Sandy Hook Elementary, where a gunman armed with a military-style assault rifle slaughtered the children and six teachers and administrators Friday. He also killed his mother at her home. If police know why, they have not said.

Students at Sandy Hook, which serves kindergarten through fourth grade, will resume classes in a formerly shuttered school in a neighboring community in January.

President Barack Obama on Wednesday pressed Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. He also called for stricter background checks for people who seek to purchase weapons and limited high capacity clips.

"This time, the words need to lead to action," said Obama, who set a January deadline for the recommendations.

In the meantime, mourners overlapped at back-to-back funerals that started Monday and will continue all week.

The first of Wednesday's funerals in Newtown was for 7-year-old Daniel Barden, a gap-toothed redhead and the youngest of three children whose family described him as "always smiling, unfailingly polite, incredibly affectionate, fair and so thoughtful towards others, imaginative in play, both intelligent and articulate in conversation: in all, a constant source of laughter and joy."

Hundreds of firefighters formed a long blue line outside St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church as bells sounded and bagpipes played. Daniel wanted to join their ranks one day, and many came from New York, where his family has relatives who are firefighters.

Family friend Laura Stamberg of New Paltz, N.Y., whose husband plays in a band with Daniel's father, Mark, said Daniel was a thoughtful boy who held doors for people and would sit with another child if he saw one sitting alone.

She said that on the morning of the shooting, Mark Barden played a game with his son and taught him a Christmas song on the piano.

"They played foosball and then he taught him the song and then he walked him to the bus and that was their last morning together," Stamberg said.

At the same time, in the town of Stratford, family and friends gathered to say goodbye to Victoria Soto, a 27-year-old teacher who has been hailed as a hero for dying while trying to shield her students, some of whom managed to escape.

"She had the perfect job. She loved her job," said Vicky Ruiz, a friend of Soto's since first grade. Every year, she said, Soto described her students the same way. "They were always good kids. They were always angels," even if, like typical first-graders, they might not always listen, Ruiz said.

Students Charlotte Bacon and Caroline Previdi were to be laid to rest later Wednesday, and calling hours were being held for popular 47-year-old principal Dawn Hochsprung. She and school psychologist Mary Sherlach rushed toward Lanza in an attempt to stop him and paid with their lives.

The massacre continued to reverberate around America as citizens and lawmakers debated whether Newtown might be a turning point in the often-polarizing national discussion over gun control.

Private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management announced Tuesday it plans to sell its stake in Freedom Group, maker of the Bushmaster rifle, following the school shootings. In Pittsburgh, Dick's Sporting Goods said it is suspending sales of modern rifles nationwide because of the shooting. The company also said it's removing all guns from display at its store closest to Newtown.

Lawmakers who have joined the call to consider gun control as part of a comprehensive, anti-violence effort next year included 10-term House Republican Jack Kingston, a Georgia lawmaker elected with strong National Rifle Association backing.

The National Rifle Association, silent since the shootings, said in a statement that it was "prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again." It gave no indication what that might entail.

And no indication has been made publicly about the motive of 20-year-old Adam Lanza, who, clad all in black, broke into Sandy Hook Elementary and opened fire on students and staff.

Authorities say the horrific events of Friday began when Lanza shot his mother, Nancy, at their home, and then took her car and some of her guns to the nearby school.

Investigators have found no letters or diaries that could explain the attack.
