Notre Dame College second at NWCA national duals

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. ? The Notre Dame Wrestling Falcons had their run to a third National Duals title stifled by St. Cloud State (Minn.) on Sunday.

No. 7 Notre Dame (5-1) dropped No. 3 (National Wrestling Coaches Association) Central Oklahoma, 19-13, in the semifinals of the NWCA Multi-Divisional National Duals. The Falcons ? winners of the NAIA division at the Duals in 2010 and 2011 ? then lost to No. 4 St. Cloud, 17-14, in the championship match.

"We made a strong showing," said NDC coach Frank Romano. "We really wrestled well all weekend and against some very talented teams. I'm proud of our student-athletes and coaches, who have worked so hard in gearing up for this tournament. We came up just short of our goal, but we grew as a wrestling team, and that will help us down the road."

Over the two-day event, NDC went a combined 25-15 in 40 bouts. The Falcons faced the three teams ? No. 2 Newberry (S.C.), Central Oklahoma and St. Cloud ? that came into the National Duals ranked two, three and four in the NWCA Division II Coaches Poll. In their last three appearances on National Duals mats (NDC did not compete in 2012 because it was not yet a full-fledged NCAA-II member), the Falcons are a combined 11-1.

Sunday's loss halted one streak and extended another: dating back to Nov. 22, 2009, Notre Dame had won 22 straight dual matches before the meeting with the Huskies. St. Cloud Huskies (11-0 this season) have now won 37 dual matches in a row.

On Sunday, it was a clutch victory over Central Oklahoma that vaulted Notre Dame into the championship match. The Falcons defeated the Bronchos, 19-13, in a contest that went down to the wire. Johnny Papesh, Maurice Miller, Joey Davis, Eric Burgey, Brandonn Johnson, and Orlando Scales all earned victories in the six-point win. Trailing 10-6 after the 157-pound bout, Joey Davis came up big for NDC when he earned a 13-4 major over Chris Watson.

Notre Dame kept that momentum going, with Burgey, Johnson, and Scales picking up decisions in three of the final four bouts.

That victory sent NDC into the championship match against a 10-0 St. Cloud squad defending its 2011 NWCA D-II National Duals title.

The fourth-ranked Huskies went into the title match having defeated its three foes by a combined score of 96-28.

The match against SCSU was an up-and-down, see-saw affair that saw the Huskies pull ahead, 10-3 through four bouts. Back-to-back-to-back wins by Jeffrey Pelton, Davis and Eric Burgey vaulted the Falcons to a 12-10 lead, but No. 2-ranked Shamus O'Grady then picked up four key points with a 12-3 major over Charles Mason. Down, 14-12, with two bouts remaining, Brandonn Johnson took to the mat with his 13-5 season record, and he upped that mark to 14-5 with a 7-2 win over Chris Brassell. Johnson finished the weekend with a 3-1 record in four bouts.

Johnson's victory put NDC on top, 15-14, and sent the match to the heavyweight bout with just one point separating the teams.

That heavyweight bout would be a battle between two ranked combatants ?? No. 2 Jake Kahnke and No. 4 Orlando Scales

In a bout that had a 1-0 score until the final moments in the third period, Kahnke ? a senior who entered the tournament with a career mark of 101-12 ? emerged victorious, 3-0.
