The last time David Gregory went on ?Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,? he wound up climbing into a giant plastic soccer ball and competing in an elevator lobby with a similarly-attired Fallon, Steven Colbert, and Lester Holt. If the Republican and Democratic National Conventions had taken that approach instead of bringing out speaker after speaker after speaker, they probably would have got more primetime coverage on the networks.
On Wednesday, Fallon had him back on and the conversation was a little more conventional for the ?Meet the Press? host.
Gregory just had Republican nominee Mitt Romney on his show last weekend, in which Romney pulled back from the GOP ?Obamacare is Evil!? talking points, noting that some of it appeared to be something less than catastrophic towards the future of the American people.
"He?s still sort of at war with himself about how he manages the more pragmatic streak he showed as governor with all the demands of the Republican Party,? Gregory said.
That cuts both ways. Gregory also noted that the party itself was still skeptical of its nominee.
?After the convention, I talked to a Republican who said, ?You know, I feel like Republicans are finally starting to warm up to Romney,'? Gregory said.
?At this point, you?ve got to be more, man! You?ve got to be hot!? Fallon noted.
That tepidness seems to extend to George W. Bush. The former president hasn?t been vocal in his endorsement of Romney, and unlike Bill Clinton in Charlotte he was absent from the convention.
?President Bush has decided that eight years is enough. He?s done,? Gregory said.
?I was at a dinner recently with Presidents Clinton and Bush, and I covered Bush for eight years. We were at dinner there and he looked over at me and said, ?Gregory, I don?t watch you.??
?So if the ?Meet the Press? ratings are down, he can always blame the ex-president.
